"The Lasting Legacy of Mothers"

I was watching a news program on TV where a reporter was inter-viewing a woman who was Jewish. She wanted to know “how Jewish am I?” Some DNA testing had been done to affirm that she was not only Jewish, but very Jewish. Genetic scientists have devel-oped DNA testing to help answer this question for people trying to affirm or determine if they are Jewish.

A distinctive set of genetic markers is unique to those who are descendants of Jewish ances-tors. What scientists have found is that all Jewish people can be traced back to four women who lived about 4000 years ago.

Two things jumped in my heart as I heard this statement, Rachel, Leaha, Bihah and Zilpah. These are the two daughters of Laban who married Jacob and their handmaidens. These four women gave birth to Jacob’s twelve sons and daughter. They are the “mothers” of Israel. Their DNA is still being passed from one gener-ation to another. The second thing that leaped within me was that once again science unwittingly confirms scripture in both its timing and its matter.

These mothers are still being honored despite all the time that has past. I know there are moments when mothers wonder about whether they are making any difference and having any impact. The blessing of those who obey God and do His commandments is “visited upon the thousands”. Whether to a thousand generations or thousands of descendants the blessing of godly women upon their families endures! Happy Mothers’ Day to all our moms!

We love you and so does the Lord. You are very important! You pass on not only your genes, but your spirit, your beliefs and your values.
